RYAN AEROSPACE Wins Prestigious QLD Premier's Export Award

Friday 19 November 2021 Australian Defence Minister, the Hon Peter Dutton today announced that RYAN AEROSPACE (Australia) has been awarded a series of contracts to supply nearly 300 jet fighter and helicopter training simulators to the US Air Force as part of the innovative new program known as "Pilot Training Transformation" or PTT. "This is another example of the way defence industry in Queensland, and across Australia, is showcasing Australian innovation and ingenuity on the world stage," Mr Dutton said. The Gold Coast firm is seen as a pioneer in the development of a new generation of flight training devices that leverage virtual and mixed reality technologies. In recent years, the US Air Force has suffered not only from a shortage of pilots, but also a shortage of flight instructors who can deliver one-on-one training to the students. Further, it has proven cost prohibitive to procure more traditional simulators because of the extremely high cost. The government's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) were tasked with looking to industry to find a better way to train pilots and RYAN AEROSPACE as a partner with Vertex Solutions, LLC were one of the many companies that made a submission to the government. RYAN AEROSPACE developed a modular and reconfigurable flight training simulator that can be modified to represent a number of different fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. The simulators offer much greater value for money and have only a very small footprint compared to traditional training devices. Coupled with a learning management system, the simulators allow a change of instruction from a "teacher-centered" model to more of a "learner-centered" training model. In other words, students (with the help of a virtual instructor) can virtually teach themselves many of the desired learning outcomes. The system is supported by an after-action review software package that automatically assesses, grades and logs the student's performance. Major General Wills, 19th Air Force Commander has said "It's not because the VR puts magic in your head, it's because the student has put hours and hours of practice into a very realistic training situation. It's not that we want to cut those hours, but if I can have you solo by ride 4 (as much as 10 rides sooner than normal) imagine what I can do between rides 4 and 44." Around 180 of the systems have already been delivered and installed ahead of schedule and the US Air Force Aviators have commenced training. It is expected that the final simulators will be delivered and installed in early 2022. Tuesday 11 August 2020 RYAN AEROSPACE (AUSTRALIA) has won the coveted Small Business of the Year Award in the International Military Training and Simulation (MS&T) Awards, a global awards program aimed to showcase the people, products, processes and organisations that deliver the sustained innovation and quality products and services of the military simulation training industry and community. Managing Director of RYAN AEROSPACE, Chris Ryan said he was "delighted to take out this prestigious award" giving credit to his small but growing team. "It's recognition of many years of hard work, persistence and a yearning desire to continue innovating and disrupting traditional training markets", he added. RYAN AEROSPACE specialises in the design, manufacture and through-life support of helicopter simulation training systems and has had recent success with the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and the US Marine Corps. Markets have also increased in Europe and Asia and even here in Australia; especially with new products which leverage the power of virtual reality and mixed reality technologies. The award was scheduled to be presented in person at I/ITSEC, the world's largest military simulation and training event in Orlando, Florida later this year but Mr Ryan said it was likely that an alternative ceremony will need to take place. Deputy Commander Fleet Air Arm, Captain Grant O'Loughlan, Royal Australian Navy took possession of three RYAN AEROSPACE virtual reality helicopter simulators at an official handover ceremony at HMAS Albatross, Nowra, NSW Australia. The three simulators will be used by the Fleet Air Arm's Naval Aviation Prospects Scheme as an engagement tool to attract the interest of aspiring aircrew to join the Royal Australian Navy. Captain O'Loughlan said that he was impressed with the new simulators and (coming from a helicopter background) somewhat surprised with how realistic they were. He added that it was important for the Australian Defence Force to support local entrepreneurial businesses such as RYAN AEROSPACE. He said these simulator units will be a valuable asset for Navy in supporting Defence Force recruiting. Managing Director of RYAN AEROSPACE, Chris Ryan said he was "delighted to partner with the Navy to develop a bespoke system in conjunction with the highly popular HELIMOD Mark III product launched earlier this year". The units take advantage of improved capability of virtual reality technology. In addition to the HELIMOD Mark III helicopter simulator units, RYAN AEROSPACE developed a unique accompanying unit comprising a PC and monitor with integrated cabling and head-tracking sensors. This allows spectators to see on a display screen what the pilot is seeing in the virtual reality goggles. The display unit has wheels attached and doubles as a shipping crate by being laid down flat, with the HELIMOD device sitting right on top. This allows staff to push the devices easily to the purposely modified van for transportation. The simulators have motion actuators attached to the base and link with the simulation software to provide an even more realistic experience. It is expected that the simulators will be getting constant use as they travel around the country to various events including the International Air Show at Avalon in February. The handover ceremony in Nowra earlier this week attracted some significant interest from Captain Fiona Sneath, Commanding Officer HMAS Albatross and Commanding Officers from Fleet Air Arm Squadrons. Mr Ryan said that in a few weeks, RYAN AEROSPACE will be participating at the world's largest military simulation and training event in Orlando, Florida and will be taking two devices. The HELIMOD Mark III has attracted a great deal of interest from another International Navy entity who will be participating in a trial program using the product in December.
