Every US Navy and Marine Corps pilot passes through primary flight training in the T-6B Texan II, the aircraft that turns raw aptitude into the fundamentals of flight before students ever specialise into jets, props, or helicopters. It is the busiest, highest-throughput stage of the entire naval aviation training pipeline, and it is where the Navy has the most to gain from training smarter rather than simply training more.

Project Avenger was the Navy's answer: a modernisation initiative built to increase pilot throughput and cut the time and cost of producing combat-ready aviators, without compromising the standard the fleet depends on. Vertex Solutions won the contract to deliver the extended reality technology behind it, and RYAN AEROSPACE was brought in as the hardware partner to build it.

Undergraduate pilot training runs at volume, which is exactly what makes it hard to modernise. NAS Corpus Christi and NAS Whiting Field, two of the Navy's busiest undergraduate pilot training locations, needed a way to give every student far more repetition on core flight tasks, without adding more aircraft, more instructors, or more flight hours than the Navy could sustain.



The Navy structured its answer as a five-year, single-award IDIQ contract, worth up to $28 million, with room to field as many as 150 Immersive Training Devices over the life of the program. That scale was the real test. A device that works well as a handful of prototypes is a very different proposition to 150 units, spread across two of the Navy's busiest training wings, all expected to perform identically and hold up to daily student use.

RYAN AEROSPACE was named by Vertex Solutions as its hardware partner for Project Avenger, tasked with engineering and delivering the Immersive Training Devices (ITDs) at the centre of the program, working alongside Varjo, TakeFlight, and ASTi, who bring the headset, software, and audio systems that complete each device. Drawing on the proven success of the Immersive Training Devices delivered to the US Air Force at bases right across the country, this solution was logical step.
